The character of the text on The Nature and Purpose of the Church as a stage in the development of a "convergence instrument" must be borne in mind when one decides to probe any aspects of that document. The text is not presented as the final outcome of a process. In addition, the text represents an effort to describe a convergence which is not one that is merely the fruit of research and deliberation by individual scholars, however outstanding.
