In the vast majority of human cultures, a close correlation exists between healing and religion. The priest-physician who fulfils religious and medical functions is common in many cultures. Such cultures conceive of healing as a process not easily understood or manipulated by ordinary human beings, but rather related to the transcendent and the holy.
