Ethnic, gen der, and de velopmental dif ferences in the so cial ex pec - ta tions of Af ri can Amer ican, His panic, and Eu ropean Amer i can high school stu dents (n = 277) were as sessed. Stu dents’ re sponses to 16 brief vid eotaped scenes of ev eryday so cial en coun ters were cat e - go rized to rep re sent four do mains: group ori entation, ex pressive - ness, as ser tive ness, and ag gres sive ness. Sig nificant eth nic dif fer - ences emerged in each do main: Group-ori ented re sponses were given sig nif i cantly more of ten by His panic and Eu ro pean Amer i can students; ex pressive and ag gres sive re sponses were sig nificantly more fre quent among Af ri can Amer ican and His panic stu dents; and as ser tive re sponses were more fre quent among Eu ro pean Amer i cans com pared to Af ri can Amer icans. Males’ so cial ex pec ta - tions were less group ori ented and as ser tive and more ex pres sive and ag gres sive. Fe males’ ex pec ta tions for as sertiveness in creased with grade level. Eth nic and gen der dif ferences were sim i lar across youth of dif fer ent ages. The ob served dif ferences are dis cussed as potential sources of cross-eth nic con flict among high school stu dents.
