Be cause low-sex-ra tio so ci et ies are likely to have in creased fam ily con flict, and be cause fam ily con flict in creases ag gression, it was predicted that these so ci et ies would have higher rates of vi o lent crimes such as ho mi cide, rape, and as saults. These pre dic tions were sup - ported in re gression anal yses of Inter pol data for 70 coun tries that used a va ri ety of con trols for level of eco nomic de vel op ment, ecol ogy (mean tem perature, pop ulation den sity, pop ulation move ment), marriage sys tem, and geo graphical re gion. The re sults in dicate that fam ily vari ables can ac count for a sub stantial amount of the crossna tional vari ance in vi olent crime.
