A nec es sary con dition to re duce bar ri ers is a di a logue in which dis ciplines de fine their iden tities and per spectives on the - ory and re search. The ar ticle ini ti ates such a self-anal y sis in so cial psy chol ogy. First, a his tor i cal over view of ma jor the oretical sys tems and schools maps the ter ri tory of so cial psy chol ogy, its mis sion and method. Then, an ex am i na tion of the strat egy, de sign of ex per i - ments, and the in terpretation of find ings re veals spe cific sources of re sis tance to the orizing about cul tural in flu ences and con ducting theory-driven cross-cul tural re search. Finally noted are bar ri ers in ethnographic re search, in clud ing re strictive def initions of cul ture that in hibit in quiry into mass cul tures, a body of phe nomena that defines a com mon meet ing ground for fruit ful ex change.
