As the in tellectual Left moved from the anti govern ment ac - tivism of the early 1960s to Marx ism and ex pectations of the death of cap italism in the 1970s, and through the dis en chant ment with so cialist com munism and alien ation from West ern cul ture ex pressed by postmodernism in the 1980s and 1990s, the cen trality of these at - titudes in the an thropology pro fessorate of the elite uni ver si ties re - sulted in pro found changes in the re search or ganization of an thro - pology and its choice of meth ods. This ar ti cle will at tempt to out line these changes and their im pact on the ef fec tive ness of an thro pol ogy as sci ence.
