The Influence Of Preheating On Cooling Rates In Alumunium Welding Aluminium is a metal with a low weld ability, and it is possible that preheating can slow cooling rates and thus significantly improve the mechanical properties of weld joints. A practical instrument is needed to do the preheating properly which must be able to convey optimum mechanical properties and that can be easily developed once it has proved it self. This research was experimental and was enacted by direct measurement of sample specimens. The specimens were prepared in various conditions, especially the preheating temperatures. The resulting measurements were then analysed and comparisons made to obtain a conclusion. Cooling rate data was obtained from thermocouples attached to points. Conclusion, preheating does decrease cooling rates, supporting the hypothesis. Follow-up research will look into the effects of different thermal cycles, especially cooling rates, on mechanical proporties.
