Weeds choke crops and stunt growth and mechanized weeding can be a quick and efficient method of overcoming this problem it also reduces costs (labour, etc) and increases crop yields. Therefore, the aim of this research was to design and construct an efficient one wheel tractor weeder for use in the cultivation of cotton that would be put through field trials and then improved/modified as necessary.The machine was designed to be practical and structurally strong, and consisted of an engine, frame, transmission system, steering wheel, rotary cutter traction wheel, support wheel and double s share landslide for furrows. Preliminary trials were run on fuel consumption, speed working depths, wheel skidding, strength, rollover angles and weed burying capabilities. Test trials indicate that the machine was capable of working at speeds of between 1.12 k.p.h and 3.48 k.ph. at working depths of from 5 cm to 10 cm, fuel consumption was around 8.0 litres to 12.4 litres per ha. The engine weighed 61.25 kgs with load centre co-ordinates of 32.367 cm, 46.333 cm and 6.467 cm respectively. The roll over angles were computed as being 21.33° to the right and 20.32 to the left. The dynamometer reading for roll over resistance was 447.209 N, or less than that for Rr, or 802.661 N. Power requirement (M) was obtained by increasing movement power (Dg) and knife rotary power (Dr). Calculations show that power available for use was between 558.546 and 1648.457 Watts.
