Biographies of californians are abundant, while there are few of the state itself. From Josiah Royce's repentant picture in 1886 of gold rush barbarity, followed by hubert howe bancroft's formidable records, then on to robert glass cleland's and walton bean's surveys and finally down to kevin star's recently enlightening and vivid works, the list is short. Specific areas of california life regulargy receive their due from publishers motion picture and wine industries, water supplies or other endangered natural resources, transportation lines, expanding cities, and of course there are always picture books. but one great area stands virtually untouched. Beyond a few histories of colleges and universities, no comprehensive, modern history of california public higher education exists. Now at last someone has masterfully carved out a large portion of this vast topic. Obvious but overlooked, the subject has been waiting for a patient and inventive scholar like john aubrey douglass, dedicated to digging in state and university archives, education department and post secondary commission records, committee files, and newspapers .....
