Isi artikelIn the acknowledgements to his biography of william heard lipatrick and there were giants on the land, john beineketraces the genesis of his work to a casual community supper conversation with a former student unjustly maligned both kilpatrick and dewey. As beineke recalls "having always enjoyed biographical studies and looking for a new research indertaking i thought "why not take a stab at kilpatric ?" Why not indeed ? The recent availability of kilpatrick's previously sealed 57 year diaries provided an enviable body of source material with which to begin. Beineke's question and the work that resulted from it offer the opportunity to take a close look at the nature and purpose of biography and in particular, of educational biography. A burst of recent literature on the art / craft / girl of biography offers perspectives from biographers of literary and political figures, and from historians who use boigraphy, as barbara says, because it encompasses the universal in the particular .....
