The influence of vitamin E suplementation on the improvement of neurological status in acute ischemic stroke Background: Free radical generation and increased oxidative stress in ischemic stroke have a distinctive role in the pathogenesis of ischemic brain injury. Antioxidant could potentially be usefull in preventing free radical damage. Methods: A double blind, post test randomized control trial study was conducted during July 2005-July 2006. Subjects were 92 acute ischemic stroke patients hospitalized in neurology ward Dr. Kariadi Hospital divided into 2 groups, those who accept stroke ischemic standart therapy + placebo (n=46) and those who recieved stroke ischemic standard terapy + Vitamin E 400 IV daily (n=46) for 4 weeks. The severity of neurological deficit was measured by Orgogozo Scale administered on admission, day 7, 14, 21 and 28. The alteration of scores were compared between groups. Results: After day 28th, the mean Orgogozo score were increased significantly in both of groups. The vitamin group had higher score. The mean Orgogozo scores in placebo group vs vitamin group were: day-7th 60,2 (15,38) vs 67,3 (17,75); day-14th 61,8 (16,71) vs 69,9 (18,03); day-21th 64,5 (17,80) vs 74,1 (18,72); day-28th 65,3 (17,96) vs 77,3 (17,75).
