The etiology of speech delay cases in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital Jakarta Background: Speech delay is the most common developmental disorder in children with 3-10% prevalence rate. Early detection and appropriate intervention in children with speech delay could further reduce social, emotional and cognitive problems. Parental awareness to this disorder is needed. The objective of this study is to investigate the etiology of speech delay in children and to define the time when theirparents bring them to the doctor to get the first treatment. Methods: a descriptive study for all speech delay children were done at Tumbuh Kembang Swadana Out patient Clinic Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital during 2002 to 2003, with inclusion criteria: the children were diagnosed by pediatric neurologist and at least were seen three times. Result: From 200 children identified with speech delay, 163 were boys (81.5%) and 37 were girls (18.5%). Mostly, they came to the doctor to gef the first treatment between 18 months and 36 months old. Thirty four percent of the etiology was autism (34.0%). Brainstem Evoked Response Auditory (BERA) test reported that 41.5% children suffered moderate to severe hearing loss. Conclusion: The most frequent etiology of speech delay in children is autism and their parents were late to see the doctor
