Following the taxonomy described in Llinares Garcia (2006) of the main language functions realised in the classroom by early foreign language learners, the article analyses the realisation of the personal function in five-year-old native speakers of English and five-year-old EFL learners in classroom contexts. The study has two main aims: to present a taxonomy of the realisation of the personal function of language in L1 and L2 classroom contexts, and to show the role of the teacher in the realisation of this function in the L2 by young EFL learners.
