This compact and well written book is both well informed and of a high degree of accuracy, a clear and fairly basic presentation by a literate and equanimous author not afraid to venture his own preferences. It could be thought of either as a massive expansion of an encyclopedia article written for a very ambitious and patient layman, or as a rather specialized text book for an undergraduate reading list covering a timely topic and buttressed bu ontroductory material, with bibliography and notes, that provides fundamental notions and ground surveys to be found in good basic introductions to modern linguistics. In this way the book presents a particular subfield nourished by judicious and accesible background allusion and reference, yet fpr the rubric of contemporary life and newspaper reading that the current field of linguistics can illuminate greatly. There are places in the book where reference is made to the term sosciolinguistics or to scholars and authors who are labeled with that name .....
