Urban sanctuaries illuminates the validating role youth organizations and the people in them can play in the lives of adolescents facing the over whelming violence and often indifferent institutions of inner cities. In five years of ethnographic research, the authors studied 60 organizations defined as successful on the basis of the views of neighborhood youth, Successful organizations are defined as those youth claim as their own organizations they join, value highly, and participate in with sustained interest and consistent commitment.
