There is much to admire in kim hays's new book, practicing virtues moral traditions at quaker and military boarding schools. What i do not admire relates to what the book invited me to want more of rather than what i see as wrong heated mistaken or uninspired. What began life as a dissertation at the university of california berkeley, hays transformed successfully into a book on a topic of the moment (for all moments, as i see it). this book is about learning to be good, as she sayd in the first line of her preface. It is a fine first time an augur of good things to come, an indication of a writer who attends carefully not only to what she means to say but also to how she will say what she means .....
