Isi artikel
The present study investigates the relationship between phonemic awareness and Portugese orthography acquisition. Two groups of low socio-economic Brazilian children participated. The first group consisted of 32 children learning to read through a phonic method. The second consisted of 26 children learning to read through a syllabic method. Phonemic awareness was measured at the beggining of the school year, coinciding with the beginning of instruction in reading. Progress in literacy acquisition was measured either at the end, or at the middle and the end of the school year. The results of the present study confirm the results of previous investigations. In general, awareness of phonemes was related to progress in learning to read and write. However, the result of the present study suggest that variations in phonemic awareness, observed at the beginning of literacy acquisition, may be less important for Portugese orthography acquisition when children learn to read through a syllabic method than when they learn to read through a phonic method.
