This article provides a detailed examination of everyday events at a Canadian vocational high school during the period between the two world wars. Based primarily on interviews with former students, the account reveals both that the schooling experience was highly structured, and how these structures were continually reconstructed by the actions of staff and students. Among students, those with the most control over the conditions of their education were the male students in senior technical classes, suggesting an alternate view of the historical struggle over vocational education.
