Ordinary life, like the real world, is an expression often used among academics to refer to such everyday things as ordering lunch, getting a haircut or finding a place to park. However when the talk used in these ordinary affairs becomes the object of discusssion, then we have lest the ordinary. Enter the academic, mixing the two is sometimes a source of amusement, and sometimes simply a sign of bad taste. So I say to the waitress "I'l have the apple pie" and my philosophically inclined companion asks (referring to my statement, not my decision). Is that a prediction, an order or the expression of a hope ? The waitress returns to say "It's good thing you chose the apple pie because that's all we have left" and my companion asks "Did you choose ? After all there were no choises. Observe this progression, first the ordinary or ordinary life then comes philosophy as the occasionally intrusive reflectionon the ordinary and finallu of we wish to go even farther, there is philosophy as the record of that reflection .....
