The articles in this special issue share some common themes, raise points for debate, and offer ideas for new research on young adolescents in the middle grades and older adolescents in high schools. The common themes stress the great diversity of students and their schools across the years of adolescence, the simultaneity of students' physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development, and the concurrent and complex influence on students of multiple environments including schools, families, communities, and peer groups. Several debatable issues are raised about the importance for student success in school of active learning, integrated learning, responsive school and classroom practices, and community interventions. From the results of the research of scholars from several disciplines, we draw ideas for new research, for improved practice, and for the education and professional development of educators.
