Isi artikelThe road accident information across countries of South East Asia represents only the tip of the iceberg. It is widely known that several accidents are not reported to police due to a wide array of reasons and there is no IOO% reporting system from hospitals. Traffic mixing with motorized and non-motorized vehicles, large volume of pedestrians, uncontrolled speeds on poorly maintained roads, lack of safety regulations, invisible enforcement of safety laws and a neglected road safety attitude contribute in a number of ways to this growing problem. The Asian socio-cultural and fatalistic attitudes of communities is also responsible for unsafe behaviours on the roads. South-East Asia countries, including Indonesia, are making slow but steady progress in saving lives through strategic policies. Coordinated road safety programme on an intersectoral approach is the key to success in road sqfety. By implementing urgent road safety measures in these countries, many more young and productive lives can be saved and the human pain, agony, anxiety and suffering can be reduced in the coming years.
