Aldosterone is implicated in the pathogenesis of many cardiovascular diseases in addition to end-organ damage in hypertension. Aldosterone antagonism has proven beneficial in the treatment of hypertension, chronic heart failure and oedematous states. Eplerenone is a new selective aldosterone receptor antagonist that has potential benefits for the treatment of a wide range of cardiovascular diseases, without the anti-androgenic side effects associated with spironolactone
